  •  Cheers to Edward Everett (23+ / 0-)

who, on that day in 1863, was the real attraction at the Gettysburg dedication ceremonies.  Everett was a Unitarian minister whose reputation for oration was sterling and well-deserved.  Lincoln's address still resonates today, not only because of its power, but its brevity.  Even in today's generation of THX/LOL, it is short enough to retain attention.  But back then, not long after Lincoln and Douglas had engaged in a debates totalling 21 hours, brevity was not necessarily considered a virtue in public oration.  So, if you have time today, take some of it to revel in the grandeur and power of Edward Everett's oration.

Jeers to lost friends.  I live outside of the central area of Philadelphia these days, so I don't get to many AA meetings down there.  One, when I have the chance, that try to attend, is at 7:15AM during the week, and 8AM on Saturdays, right off Rittenhouse Square.  I need a day off, or my ex to take my son on a Friday night, in order to pull it off (I get to work at 7AM).  My primary motivation to show up there is to see my old friend Bob, who I've known since he first showed up in AA over twenty years ago.  Bob had trouble over the years staying clean and sober.  But he put together several runs of extended time, and managed to live a life filled with artistic creation, marriage and fatherhood.  No longer.  Our disease, after years of battering at his walls, finally breached them for good.  Bob is gone.  His gentle spirit now drifts along on the eddies and flows of eternity.  I will miss him terribly.  Here is a link to his website, which shows how wonderfully creative he was.  He was only 50 years old.

In tribute, here is something from Ofra Haza (and friends), another creative force who died much too young:
