    it seemed that Lincoln was more about stopping the spread of slavery north than ending it in the south.

    But history can get twsited.

      that if slavery were restricted it would wither and die. A lot of slave owners in the South thought so too. Which is why the Fire Eaters were able to sell the idea of Lincoln's election being a cassus belli. For such people, limiting the extension of slavery amounted to abolition.

      Nothing human is alien to me.
