  •  It won't help. (3+ / 0-)

For the talking filibuster to have any negative effects, their constituents must consider it shameful, and actually be a burden. They will read prepared remarks from right wing web sites, cycling between senators - if there are 40 in opposition, that's barely over half an hour per senator to talk each day. Trivial.

Any reform needs to have teeth. It shouldn't just institutionalize "Republican Endless Press Conference Week", which Reid could already do if he felt it would accomplish anything.

    •  If Republcians Thought Talking Would Help Them... (17+ / 0-)

...they'd already be doing it, not hiding behind "procedural" crap.

On the Internet, nobody knows if you're a dog... but everybody knows if you're a jackass.

The majority leader is the one that gets to decide to move on to other business, sidetracking the filibustered motion.

If Reid thought that talking would help, they'd be talking right now. He has the ability to make them do it if he wants, if he thought he would win by doing so.

Talking won't help them no, but it won't hurt them as much as you think either. The point is we just need to get rid of the damn thing.

Tell me, WHEN have we ever as Democrats made any significant use of the Filibuster? The fact is it's been a tool of Racists and now the current GOP to block bills they don't like. It has never been used to "protect the minority" as it is espoused unless you consider "protecting white hetero-normative privilege" the same thing.

We're talking Filibuster reform because the GOP is using it to basically grief the entire legislative process. The correct thing to do is not to make it more difficult, which might slow its use, but to remove it, which will STOP its use.

Leaving it at all only gives the GOP a tool to bludgeon Democrats with. I am thoroughly unconvinced that the Democratic party would ever be able to make enough significant positive use of the Filibuster to counter the level of outright obstruction we're facing.

I'm trying for the vast pool of poorly informed voters that base their decisions on the collection of sound bites that they've heard.

We need to help make sure that the repulsive sound bites of the R's bloviating are widely heard.
