  •  I've hiked down GC 3x times to Phantom Ranch... (11+ / 0-)

Once down via Kaibab/up via Bright Angel trail, once down North Rim to Phantom Ranch, once down Hermit Trail to river and back.  Last year, I also took the raft trip down the complete 279 miles of the Grand Canyon, from Lee's Ferry to Pearce Ferry.  I'd highly recommend each of these hikes, and also the eight-day full-river trip, though I'd caution that the Hermit Trail is a much rougher hike than the other two, but the stream at the bottom is Eden-like idyllic with a wonderful swimming hole up the side canyon.  BTW: because the Colorado river water in the GC comes via the depths of Glen Canyon resevoir, the river temperature is hypothermic-inducing chilly mid-50s instead of the much warmer 75 to 80 degree plus water in the pre-dam era.
