Conservatives feel that they have to embrace certain beliefs that are demonstrably false in order to belong, almost as a statement of faith.

To any of us, the 4 billion plus age of the earth is something determined by science, not subject to dispute or disagreement unless you've got real independently verifiable evidence impeaching the current best evidence for the earth's age.

But the conservative mind requires people to believe certain things as an article of faith.  It's not just that they don't want to believe what we come to understand as fact by rational means.  It's that there are a whole host of signifiers in the culture of the right, and these litmus tests or phrases signal group membership.  I don't think Rubio believes that the earth is 6000 years old; rather I think he's a man of limited imagination and creativity and probably doesn't think about the age of the earth at all.  It's that he needs to say what he says as an expression of his membership in a group.

He thinks that by being a genial fellow he can create the right persona to parlay that into the presidency a la Reagan. But he's not right about that. He is missing crucial elements to his experience, values and personality. But I'm not going to tell him what those are.
