when diarists call it anything, especially when they make up cutesy names for it.  In my limited time on the web, and my further limited time on Kos, I try to rapidly read (not rabidly read) as much interesting stuff as I can.

When a diary veers away from an interesting intro to give a cutesy name to a part of the infrastructure, that is sometimes enough to tilt my interest toward seeing what's next.

"below the fold" is a reference to the idea of newspapers having text above and below the fold (with above being the part you are exposed to--the top headlines).   But even there, it would be more accurate to think of below the squiggle as the equivalent of "turn to page 17."

Further, if you've already clicked on the diary, you only need to scroll down a bit to get to the next point.  (this is different on something like a front page diary, where you might have to ask someone to click "continue" to get more text).  It's kind of counter-intuitive to the idea of the internet, IMO, to treat a little bit further down the page as some distinct continuation.

my curmudgeonly view:  I don't care what you call it, but I'd vote to get rid of it.  Maybe it's a navel because it produces a lot of navel-gazing.
