    The belief that the seven days of creation were not seven 24-hour days but rather seven much longer periods -- not necessarily of the same length -- is not some contemporary compromise between religion and science; it is not a watering-down of the creation belief in order to better fit the scientific timeline.  It is in fact the dominant interpretation of the Genesis account among Jewish scholars, predating Christianity by quite some time and predating any accurate scientific findings about the age of the universe by considerably more.

    Also, Rubio's quite clear in his earlier statement -- " I think that's a dispute amongst theologians."  He's not taking the scientific approach into account at all, and you don't need to look at the "seven actual eras" phrase to see that.

    He's perfectly entitled to do that, of course.  Doesn't make him dumb.  Does, however, make him someone I don't want in charge of what gets taught in public schools.
