    they scream other mandates violate religious freedom.

    Prayer is still quite legal in public schools.  Anyone who wants to can pray silently for help on a test or help digesting cafeteria food etc.    

    What is illegal is having state paid workers forcing students to tolerate being prayed at, often in ways which are obnoxious to their family's chosen way to express faith in public or not.

      People frequently say that many of the first European settlers came to what has since become the US for "religious freedom." But what they actually came here for is that they weren't allowed to use the government in their respective European countries to force their religion on others, and thus came here to be able to mandate their religion on all citizens here. Thankfully, our country's immediate founders were able to keep that desire out of our Constitution.
