    got here we proceeded to wipe out half the large species that we found, but instead of looking backwards and measuring seniority we need to deal with who we are now. Saber toothed tigers are gone and Facebook is here.

      as we're often warned in connection with other matters. Some paleohistorians think the climate of the Americas was already shifting in ways that disadvantaged the megafauna, and humans only got here in time to give the coup de grace - if that. There's a minority opinion that all of North America was seriously depopulated by a meteor or Tunguska-type event some 13,000 years ago...including the Clovis people. (One reason we know so little about him is that they appeared suddenly and disappeared even more suddenly, with no obvious successor culture.)
