  •  For once I am with JNEREBEL (6+ / 0-)

Tell it to the mothers whose babies would be killed in the fighting that a cease fire is not a good step.  A lot easier to negotiate when there isn't active bloodshed going on.

    •  Avoiding the underlying issues isn't a solution. (0+ / 0-)

If there was something on the table to negotiate that doesn't return to exactly the same position as we had before Israel killed over 120 people in Gaza you might have a point.

Praising or celebrating this kind of disgusting political theatre is not hope or change, it's just more of the same.

Republicans make America feel like the scariest place on Earth from the inside, and look bat-shit crazy from the outside.

      •  Maybe this leads nowhere new (5+ / 0-)

but I can guarantee you that it'd get to nowhere new while people are being actively bombed -- no "maybe."

Ceasefires are never the ultimate answer on their own, really, but without stopping the direct violence, there's not even a chance to get anywhere different at all.

And as this has been seemingly right on the brink of a fuller ground invasion, I'd say the possibility that people step back for a minute is better than not, even if it isn't a "solution," exactly.

Anything that makes an attempt to avoid more dead or injured people now is a step that I will applaud, with the hopes that there will also be ways to avoid more dead or injured people tomorrow.

      •  Necessary, but not sufficient (0+ / 0-)

i think that's the phrasing we're looking for here.  A cease fire is necesary, but not sufficient for peace to happen.

I think we all agree with you that this is not anything permanent, and most probably woul agree with the "disgusting political theater" characterization as well.

However, anytime action happens that prevents 120 dead from becoming 1,200 dead, like last time, I'll be pretty excited about it.

Some days, the status quo looks like an improvment over where you might be headed.
