  •  GEHA buys 48 state licenses, still under radar (5+ / 0-)

"Government Employees Health Association deal lays groundwork for post-reform world"

Government Employees Health Association Inc. bought a life insurance affiliate of Allstate this month, but it doesn’t plan to get deep into that business...

The bigger prize was the 48 state insurance licenses Surety had amassed. Those licenses will be Lee’s Summit-based GEHA’s ticket to compete in the online insurance exchanges that will be set up in each state next year as part of the Affordable Care Act....

Size wouldn’t seem to be a problem for GEHA, which employs more than 1,100 people — almost all of them local. From its origins 75 years ago insuring railway mail clerks, GEHA now offers the second-largest national health and dental plans for civilian federal employees in the United States and administers a federal health plan for people with pre-existing conditions in more than 20 states.

GEHA could be THE gamechanger heading towards single-payer.
