  •  She is, of course, correct (0+ / 0-)

on two points, albeit fairly minor nitpicky points:

    1) Fear of a Romney presidency was a driving factor.  In fact, a ton of ink was spilled here making that exact point repeatedly. "Yes, Obama is anti-civil liberties, but think about how much Romney would be"  You have seen those.  How much is of coruse impossible to disentangle, but let's not be so disingenuous to pretend that wasn't part of it.
    2) Obama ran as something of a blank slate in 2008, which explains why people are surprised when he turns out to do centrist things.  Of coruse, those who were paying attention knew that's what was coming, so it's not like there was the kind of hide the ball Romney got into.  Now THERE'S a blank etch-a-sketch for you.

In fact, on a lot of issues, WE still don't know how the President is going to bounce.  Keystone XL?  Social Security cuts?  Grand bargain?  Tax Cuts?  Climate change?  Even his closest supporters don't really have a good handle on how those will play out.

As for what Democrats stand for, well obviously there's a fair bit of disagreement within the ranks as well.

That said, the broad themes of what Democrats stand for aren't exactly tough to figure out if you pay attention to the wider party.  Reining in corporate power, restoring democracy, restoring economic opportunity, public investment, health care for all, education for all, environmental and worker protections, women's rights.

Not exactly a surprising list there, no?

anyway, I suppose the ability to take some thin issues and turn them into an essay is what columnists get paid for.

    •  He ran as "something of a blank slate"? (0+ / 0-)

Health care, ending the war in Iraq, increasing troops in Afghanistan, closing Gitmo- any of that ringing a bell?

      •  Hence "something" (0+ / 0-)

there was also a lot of talk about "change" without talking about what that meant, for example, in the context of, well, civil liberties, climate change, and economic policy (e.g., approaches to entitlement reform, etc.)

Yes, some specifics were mentioned, while vast other areas were less concretely specifed.

...that President Obama has done, and continues to do,  centrist things as President.

The idea that he is some kind of ultra-liberal is a fantasy not exclusive to the right wing.
