    Suppose they turned up a non-trivial concentration of unbihexium-310. That would be "earthshattering" to the max...because, although we can almost certainly detect it (in an appropriately tuned mass spectrometer), we don't even know how to make the stuff!

    And the first question from the assembled leaders of the world (once the scientists explain the situation to them in words of 1 syllable or less) would be

    If we can't make this stuff, who can?
    And the next questions would be
    Where are they? Heck, what are they??
    And the last question would be
    What the hell are we gonna do when they show up??

    It's not a "fiscal cliff," it's a Fiscal Bluff--so why don't we call them on it?
