  •  It's not just big box stores Gallup came to my (4+ / 0-)

town and got a giant tax break. Everyone should check locally when there is talk of a big business coming in to make sure your mayor or city council isn't giving away the farm.

suburban downtown that got lots of tax breaks. But my understanding is that it is an excellent company which treats employees well. It now has 3 big (and actually very interesting and pretty) buildings in our downtown.
If the tax breaks attracted this company to our town, I really don't object. Employees making good salaries who not only work but also live in the area help build the tax base and also build up other businesses.

It never hurts to keep an eye on them. We have very low unemployment here and I get mad at the breaks because these companies put demands on the infrastructure and they should contribute.

        ...points of view sometimes.

        •  absolutely. But intriguing also. She lives less (0+ / 0-)

than a block away from my nephew. It's a family type neighborhood, mainly government workers, with a range of houses from lower-middle to upper middle class -- no mansions or estates.
From the little I know about her, she could afford to live in a much fancier neighborhood -- Chevy Chase or Bethesda or Potomac, but she chose instead to live about a block away from her company in our more modest part of the county.
          I like that!
