  •  I love Christmas (8+ / 0-)

... more than ever since I became an atheist!  I have SAD and hate the early darkness, so my lights & tree go up this week and stay up until at least Orthodox Christmas (January 7.)  From the street, the neighbors can't tell I have flowers on my tree and a Buddha at the top.

My next project is to make some trees for the yard out of tomato cages and lights ... maybe I'll put my Obama yard sign under one of them ;)

but which I call the Solstice Deva.  We're Wiccan.  It's a solstice tree, with a lot of Japanese washi and brocade eggs and ornaments from the 7 years in Japan.  Hmm. I wonder if I could stick a waving cat on top?

Last year I explained to my MiL that all her cherished Christmas customs were pagan--the tree, the lights, the evergreen and holy and mistletoe.  She drew herself up to her full 5 feet and glowered at me, stating in no uncertain terms, "Well, they are CHRISTIAN now. They're ours."

I am Wiccan. I celebrate both. Not enough Light in this world.

The last time we mixed religion and politics people got burned at the stake.

The tree is covered in lights, about triple normal density and damn the carbon emissions for a while.  I use gold-leaf flowers and tons of crystal to diffract the light through the room.

Having mild SAD myself, I leave it up until Russian Christmas.  Since my birthday is very close to that, I overextend and celebrate that as well!
