  •  Snakes are good tho (12+ / 0-)

They must eat some of the little critters I'm blessed with. Right now there is a dry skin by the dirt drive that I assume is one of my 4-5' grey rat snakes.

    •  I agree... (13+ / 0-)

Snakes are good, but they don't help to attract birds when draped over the feeder.  I just prefer them catching the rodents on the ground.

Actually, a snake-proof baffle is probably more important on bird houses than on bird feeders.  I had a wood duck house on a pole in the pond at our NC house.  One day, a big black snake climbed up, got inside, and swallowed all the eggs.   I think it was almost a dozen eggs.  Then, bulging with eggs inside, it couldn't get back out of the entrance hole to the house. I was mad enough to open the house and pull the snake out by its tail.  After that was when the baffle went up, but the wood ducks didn't return.

      •  I'm thinking bluebird boxes up the hill (7+ / 0-)

where my woods opens up to a field. Should work since I just saw a half dozen bluebirds sitting on wires down the lane a bit.

I got blessed with wood ducks the year before in a tree next to my viewing stand. That was fun watching them come in at dusk. The first time I couldn't figure it out when 2 flew in but only 1 came around the tree. I eventually saw how fast the other could hit the tree feet first and duck in.
