  •  Too used to getting their way for so long (17+ / 0-)

That's what it comes down to.  It used to be they had to pay lip service to community and society, etc.  Then as our society became more corporatized, they started the myth that allowing them to make as much money as possible - even at the expense of environment, jobs, etc - was good for the economy and therefore good for everyone.

Now that people are waking up and realizing their government and talking heads and even most economists have failed them, lied to them, etc. they are pissed off.  And rightly so.  They feel the pinch as they fall further and further behind.  And people feel angry as they continue to do everything they are told is "right" and are still punished any time the boss needs a bigger bonus or shareholders need another record quarter to add a moat to their giant mansion summer home.

I think that is the reason they are so bold about it now.  They are stuck between the proverbial rock and hard place and have grown way to comfortable with their own greed and sense of entitlement.  They know they are going to start losing more and more of these debates and so why not just use the last card they have left?  The giant club that is threats.  Of course it won't work because the reality is that contrary to their own beliefs, CEOs and shareholders have no real power over the people.

Papa Johns or any of those other places can go bankrupt and close their doors.  It just means business goes to their competitors who then, in theory, will need to hire people to meet the demand.  Hell, the CEOs and shareholders aren't the creators.  They aren't making, delivering the pizzas or running the stores.  They aren't pumping the gas or making those hotel beds.  They are so far removed from the daily reality that they don't realize they could quit tomorrow and NOTHING would change in their business.  The workers can run it just fine without them.
