Looks like Birdsong probably won't work, too much romance for my 17 year old son :). I may read it though, so there's that :).

In the trilogy, do they need to be read in order to be understood? Should I start him with The Ghost Road or Regeneration?

      •  They are meant to be read in order (2+ / 0-)

because the story and characters are carried through in each. Start with Regeneration. Then Eye in the Door followed by The Ghost Road.

Birdsong is a wonderful read. Masterpiece Theater on PBS did an excellent version of it last year.

        •  Ok, I'll try to get ahold of them and read them (1+ / 0-)

          over the holidays.

And I believe you about Birdsong, but my sons is.. anti 'kissing books' at this point. If there's too much romance in it, he'll balk at it. I'm still trying to encourage a reading habit so I try to stick to things that are going to interest him. Public school spent years telling him he "couldn't read", we've come a long way on that and he's read a lot of things he never would have thought he could, but I am still encouraging the enjoyment of reading.
