  •  I'm definitely putting this on my (6+ / 0-)

"gotta read it" someday list, hopefully soon.  Maybe I'll see it in a used book store.

I kind of liked Patti Duke in the "execrable" film treatment.  She was born for that part.

There's a certain type of melodrama that I love.  I think it is melodramas that try JUST hard enough to pull your heartstrings and take themselves seriously that they backfire.  Just a little less, and they're plain awful books, with not enough there to be amusing.  This sounds like one of those.

There was a Lifetime movie that I saw a couple of years ago that was like a brilliant illuminating light for me a few years ago.  And dammit, I can't remember the name now, but I did talk about it on bookflurries and some other places.  It was the single worst melodrama I had ever seen on the Lifetime Movie channel.  I could summarize it by saying that it was about two groups of girls that bully each other, with the bullying ratcheting up to new levels each time, including them seducing mutual friends and talking them into betraying the other, and ending up in a kidnapping and murder.

I was just in rapture over it.  It was like taking drugs.  I spent weeks trying to figure out what the formula was that left me in such stitches over it.

In googling for details about the film, I discovered that it had gone through two or three retitlings, typical for a loser B flick.  And, sadly, IT WAS BASED ON A TRUE STORY.  Aw shit.  Ruined my week.  The funniest film that I had ever seen, and it had to be based on a true story.  Now I felt guilty for enjoying it so much.  Which only made me enjoy it more...
