  •  But isn't the assault on Rush (6+ / 0-)

also an attack on capitalism?  Isn't Rush right by extension that we liberals will never be happy until he loses his perch behind the golden EIB microphone?

My in-laws were in town last weekend.  Good people, but my mother-in-law cannot resist political declarations, although she knows full well that we disagree on just about everything.

She's a reliable parrot for every rightwing talking point.  She said, "So, Hostess is going bankrupt, thanks to its union.  The union wanted so much, they're all going to lose their jobs because they drove the company out of business!"

I said, "I think Hostess is going out of business because their products are terrible.  Wonder Bread?!  It has zero nutritional value.  Twinkies?!  Aren't they made by some chemical process, instead of baking?  You know, a lot of companies are growing because they're making healthy snacks for children, but not Hostess.  They've had the same terrible-for-you snack food -- completely unchanged -- for more than forty years!"

And oddly enough, we were no longer talking about unions.

I sure have relatives like this:

Some of them, I am going to be facing for the holiday tomorrow, and they will NOT be in a good mood.

Well, get right down to it, I believe the factors that have led to the near-demise of hostess are complex, and have been discussed in excellent diaries hereabouts. All in all, most progressives agree that the hardship the brand is currently experiencing, has been abetted by a corporate culture that would just as happily kill a brand for which there's still apparently a market, if keeping it alive means appeasing labor unions.

On the nutritional value of  Hostess snacks, yes. Even by 1970s standards, as I recall, it was crappy junk food. So my mom never did buy Twinkies or whatnot.
