  •  I hope Hillary is telling Bibi straight up that he (5+ / 0-)

will lose the support of most Americans is he proceeds to order the IDF to massacre Palestinian civilians as the ISF has done in the past. There will be nothing Hillary, PBO, or the AIPAC can do to change make Americans approve of another massacre.

Bibi, having just lost the American presidential election, should find that to have the ring of truth.

    •  No idea. (3+ / 0-)

American public opinion tends to the strong support of Israel, for totally varied reasons. But I think that US policy support -- underneath the public statements -- has been in a subtle shift, and I have no idea which pieces of leverage Clinton uses there in private meetings. We have also been very engaged with the various revolutions going on in the region, whether that has been overt or behind the scenes, so our regional diplomatic concerns overall are probably complex, and Israel undoubtedly knows that.

Oh, to be a fly on the wall.

    •  maybe not "most" Americans, but a very big (6+ / 0-)

percentage. Photos and videos of children bleeding, parents weeping -- all the fallout of the current bombings -- have an real effect on public opinion. An Israeli ground force invasion would cause even more of this in the media.
For years we saw little of the pain suffered by Palestinians. But the media is doing a better job of covering it now. Richard Engel is in Gaza reporting right now.
As an American Jew, as a long-time supporter of Israel, I think Netanyahu's actions are disastrous not only for Gazans but also for Israel's survival.
