I seem to recall that she was one of many, many people on the primary ballot in June. There were, indeed, a few other folks with a (D) next to their name. Sen. Feinstein defeated them all quite handily, for what it's worth.

With the new "top two" system, it could, theoretically, have been possible to have Feinstein and another Democrat face off against each other in the general election, but the #2 vote getter in June was a Republican, so there you go.

Sen. Feinstein refused to engage her opponent at all, actually ignoring the press's questions on debates. Her statement went something like "I don't see the point."

While I appreciate that the Senator is not the worst possible person that CA could have representing its interests, I'd argue- gently- that if she doesn't understand the need to air opposing viewpoints during an election campaign, then it is past time for her to retire from public life.

Goodness knows she and her husband are wealthy enough that they need not work any longer if her duties as a public servant are beneath her.
