There is no way he doesn't get this. He's smarter than most of us and has access to more or less unlimited research.

Someone explain to me the lack of urgency on his part. I really don't get it.

Prior to his (first) election, an item that concerned me about Senator Obama were his statements about people seeing things as urgent crises and that he was more comfortable with a theory of change as 'evolutionary' and incremental. (Not pulling up material that I read/heard five years ago ...) My problem in reading it was it seemed like a version of either/or -- and that he fell strongly in the 'incremental' evolution camp.  For me, the world is 'punctuated evolution' -- e.g., both gradualist and sudden / revolutionary change.  If one is 'evolutionary'/gradual change, then the 'all of the above' energy strategy with the incremental increase in renewables and energy efficiency is the right path to go to gradually turn the economy toward something cleaner. In this world vision, the screams of the scientists are 'alarmist radicals' -- to speak in the environmental world, Obama would be an "EDF" or C2ES rather than or Friends of the Earth.  I believe that President Obama understands that this is an issue -- I do not think that he has absorbed how urgent the situation is. And, even worse, his scientist advisors who 'get it' (Holdren, Chu, Lubchenco) do not have the access to him / influence on him of the political advisors (such as Axelrod) and the economists (such as our wonderful Sec of the Treasury) who believe that focusing on climate is bad politically and who are using bad economic modeling (discount rate serious enough and my Starbucks coffee this morning is worth more than all of humanity in 250 years) to dismiss climate change as something that Obama should speak about and focus on.
