I thank god that I'm an atheist.

The modern conservative is engaged in one of man's oldest exercises in moral philosophy; that is, the search for a superior moral justification for selfishness. -- John Kenneth Galbraith

Chris Mooney wrote The Republican Brain which  appears to explain why the conservatives think differently.

This has been a staple of religious thought since religion was institutionalized. Before the Enlightenment this was the core thinking behind government. The Enlightenment and the European Wars of Religion really changed that, and democracy was an application of enlightenment thinking. The faith-based thinkers generally limited themselves to religion after the Scopes Trail made them such a laughing stock when they tried to enforce their faith on America through law.

Our current problem is that when Reagan conservatives took control of government they allied themselves with the religious right. The religious right is an evangelical authoritarian movement and brought the authoritarian idea back into American government at the top levels.  Currently the religious right dominates the Republican Party, and their political dominance is based on the faith-based thinking of the average conservatives which is directed by the money of right-wing plutocrat-wannabee multimillionaires. Adelson, Romney and the Koch brothers represent the plutocrat-wannabees. Karl Rove and Dick Armey are minions of the plutocrat-wannabees and represent their liaisons to the right-wing faith-based masses.

This isn't all of what is happening, of course, but this - I think - explains the anti-science and faith-based thinking the Republicans are displaying right now.
