View Diary: Why do so many folks here use the term "Old Testament" as code for barbarism? (265 comments)

  •  Then object to the barbaric laws (5+ / 0-)

Don't use a term that effectively means "Jewish Bible" as code-speak for the laws you're objecting to.

Especially since there is a rich tradition of interpreting Jewish law in ways that are enlightened not only for their times, but also for some of modern times.  For example, you probably know that the medieval Jews virtually eliminated the death penalty, saying "a Sanhedrin that gives the death penalty more than once in 70 years is a 'bloody Sanhedrin'".  That was said in Talmudic times.  Can the US state of Texas say the same?

I have read some of the writings by brilliant rabbis, wonderful monks and spectacular shamans. Can people reach into themselves and see the dark there and look into others and see who they really are?  Even atheists can do that. I respect those of any religion who are genuine not political ... There is that aspect to most religions... Some of the bed rock rules are merely the power structure protecting itself and making itself righteous in fulfilling their wants. Many religions have poilitics which is about who has the power to control you and others embedded. Look at the Bishops

I have experienced great evil from some who had control over me yet I usually can forgo rage for pity. I have mourned the love I had was not returned with at least caring in return. It took me over 40 years to realize I had no reason to feel I deserved being unloved and treated like a farm animal. But I draw lines as to how anyone can justify bad intentions or acts and use me against my own interests. I believe we all must pay pennance one way or another for the evils we do in the name of feeding our own wants and needs at others expense.

My husband is a fierce atheist so he gets uncomfortable when I talk about truths that are embedded in existence...Some would call it a spiritual aspect. I am an atheist who is a truth seeker and I look for those threads of "If - Then" . So I affirm my strongest truth is that I do not know but I will not be told my some authority what is real or true. I may chose when and where I will listen to what they say but I do hear them.

I have heard quite enough of the religious right and thier evil centers and thier justifications carefully constructed to give them exactly what thier hormones cry out for. No matter how sincere they appear to be I see their quest for power over other s and their defense of a hierarchy of domination. Even thier vision of heaven is a hierarchy based not on true inner value but on earthly markers. For example, the idea that males just by virtue of a few hormones causing a fetus to become one sex or another will be rewarded with a planet of virgins. Give me a break. But I can see how homosexuality drives them around the bend. Because it opens questions about power structures...Who can force who to obey and who can push who into sex against their will...This is why the RW loons are so cavalier about rape to the point they dismiss the costs to women.

    •  You can't define the terms (0+ / 0-)

to find offense. You have to accept the users understanding of the term.
