    you 'bout have to lie."

That's what I have heard more than once over my life here in WV where a lot of people wouldn't eat except for food stamps and other programs.  I'm now one of them.

These programs not only fail to get anyone out of poverty, they don't even provide enough to meet basic living expenses, so people do all kinds of shit "under the table" just to make ends meet.

    People have no choice.

I'd appreciate having enough income to be honest, but I don't.

I am reapplying, and will lie and say that I don't donate plasma any more. Because they will count that $45 a week as income I could apply to food. Why, yes, I could. In fact, it goes to everything else. It puts gas in the vehicle. It buys our entertainment. It pays for toilet paper and dish soap and paper towels. It pays for new socks and haircuts and flea medicine for the cats, and their food and litter too. Birthdays and Christmas comes out of that money.

I can't afford to have it counted.

This is how it makes me a liar. But it's a hell of a decision; either less food to get by with, or no toilet paper.

When you come to find how essential the comfort of a well-kept home is to the bodily strength and good conditions, to a sound mind and spirit, and useful days, you will reverence the good housekeeper as I do above artist or poet, beauty or genius.
