People forget the that whole progressive movement started in places like Minnesota, Wisconsin, Northern Illinois and even Iowa has produced quite a few progressives.

The southern portion of the midwest is a very different place then the northern half in many ways. Sure, lots of us are members of the rust belt and are members of the same class but culturally we are very different.

it's true there is still a strain of that ignorant right wing behavior even in MN, but this year's election showed who we really are. AFSCME and other progressive groups worked their butts off educating voters, and then we kicked out a lot of the Tea party idiots and now have the DFL in control of all branches of state govt. Gov. Dayton is not perfect, but a lot more progressive than many national Dems

Glossing the upper midwest Great Lakes states together with the Great Plains states misses a lot of individual detail.  "The Midwest" isn't monolithic, anymore than New York and South Carolina are the same for being "the coast."

I grew up in a midwestern, blue-collar, non-religious, union family.
