    The only way that you are going to kill bacteria is by cooking them with the microwaves.

    Gamma rays would work better.

        If  the pathogen is in the spore stage (all dried out), the microwaves should do nothing to it.

        There are already companies that do food irradiation with electron beams and x-rays.

        Coincidentally, there is a news story about that today.

        FDA Expands Irradiation Uses for Meat and Poultry

        All irradiated food must be labeled with that green circle with a plant in it. (That label does not imply radiation to me!)

        The take-away is that food irradiation requires ionizing radiation. Microwaves are non-ionizing.

        It is a quirk of quantum physics that two photons can not team up on one electron. It's one photon, one electron, one interaction. So if that photon does not have enough energy to knock an electron out of orbit, it doesn't matter how many you send in.

        An analogy is trying to throw rocks across the Mississippi river. If you can't throw a single rock hard enough to make it to the other side, then it doesn't matter how many you throw, it's not going to happen.
