  •  In my experience, semi drivers (11+ / 0-)

are, by and large, the most courteous and safe drivers on the road. I've had them signal me when it is safe to pull in front of them, and I've seen them "discipline" dangerous drivers by effectively herding them and preventing them from those not-really-enough-room-but-fuck-it lane changes. I have a lot of respect for semi drivers.

    •  Truckers (7+ / 0-)

The stereotype of truckers as meth-afflicted hillbillies is WRONG, WRONG, WRONG.

I used to drive a lot, and my unhappy experiences involving over-the-road truckers is zero. These people (sometimes women) are trying to make a living and get home in one piece with their rigs intact.

...we encountered a pretty serious highway traffic jam.  Some enerprising folks figured they'd just use the breakdown lane to pass everyone else.  Some semi drivers prevented this by pulling their rigs halfway into the breakdown lane so they couldn't be passed.  Most of the other drivers wouldn't let the would-be cheaters back in.  As people passed the semis (when their lane was moving faster) they'd honk, cheer, and wave at the semi drivers in support.

    •  In bad weather, sure, (4+ / 0-)

but I've had semi drivers in good weather be real pains.  I usually drive in the outside lane for "slow" drivers, and I've had them run right up my rear bumper, flashing their lights at me, then swerving around me so close I could touch them if my window was rolled down, then cutting in front of me before they were completely past me so I had to brake and swerve t avoid hitting them.  The only thing I did "wrong" was go the speed limit and not pull over into either the shoulder or the fast lane so they could blow past me without changing lanes themselves.

This has happened more than once, on I-35, and on I-44, highways I take nearly every working day.

In bad weather, though, they'll be nice and take care of smaller cars.

So, I have mixed feelings about semi drivers.
