  •  So I go to the grocery store... (1+ / 0-)

    It's an emergency kitty-food run.

    It's 7:30 am.

The store is a couple of miles away. I chose the route that bypasses the town center. This is a lightly traveled 4 lane state highway. On a normal workday, one might see maybe 20-30 other vehicles traveling in both directions. This morning, I saw six.

The grocery store is the anchor in a small strip mall. Opposite is a collection of small shops anchored by an old, medium sized retail facility that has been occupied by a series of retail chains that only last a few years at best. It's a lousy location. The current occupant is an unimpressive JC Penney retailer.

To my surprise, there were maybe 300 cars parked in the JC Penney half of the strip. There were about a dozen cars parked near the grocery store. The normal pattern is the opposite. In the afternoon, the grocery store parking lot is often filled to overflowing. I have NEVER seen more than a couple dozen cars parked on the opposite side. This is why the retailers don't survive in that location.

I did notice an unusual pattern, though. There were mostly old, junky-looking, dirty, cheap cars in the lot. I didn't see a single SUV. There might have been a few cars less than 5 years old, but I didn't notice anything with a shine. Really. Every car was dull and oxidized. And there were only a couple of pickup trucks.

There a mirror of this strip mall across the street anchored by a Walgreens with another adjacent lousy retail location. It's been a K Mart, a WalMart, and a Sears Outlet in less than ten years. I think that Sears bailed out and I'm not sure what's there this year. I didn't bother to look.

I counted only 8 people in the large grocery store.

Who ARE these strange people? Odds are pretty good that the prices at this store are higher than their perpetual deep discount prices during the rest of the year.

    Weird. Just plain weird.
