  •  put it to him this way then: (4+ / 0-)

    whether we do unions or whether we try to enact workplace standards at the federal level (like in France), the idea that people who work full time should not be reliant on public assistance for sustenance is fundamental and worth fighting for and that cannot happen until regular people understand that 1) most people on food stamps and other assistance are working on jobs. this is not acceptable and 2) when middle class people have living wages, the economy is healthy. they pay income taxes; they have money to make discretionary purchases;

    If he's got ANY hint of a conservative bent tell him that if we want to make cuts to things like food stamps and medicaid and welfare, the easiest and fastest way to do it is to get the working poor OFF of these programs by paying them a living wage. Reserve these programs for people who are between jobs, or disabled or otherwise cannot work or are retraining for new industries. People who are working should not have to be on these programs. We can get them off of them by raising the pay for workers who work for large corporations that can afford it.

    I'm personally in favor of unions, although I'd much prefer to see decent national standards set. I'm of two minds about unions and feel like if I had my way unions would only be for specific workplaces, where the "big rules" regarding minimum pay, overtime rules, holidays, retirements, pensions etc. would be federal laws. IOW a union might negotiate something specific to that workplace but not whether workers get paid double or triple time for holiday work.

    For the record, I am not a member of Courtesy Kos. Just so you know. Don't be stupid. It's election season. My patience is short.

    •  He is actually a progressive Democrat but there (0+ / 0-)

      are some Democrats out there and even some progressive who while they mostly support unions, they still have some issues and worries about unions.  He is one of those , unfortunately but I am working on him. But he is outspoken in support of the President and did a great job with GOTV and so on. But I have the same issue with another liberal friend of mine who has some issues with unions and while she supports some unions, it is not strong support or universal support. Whereas, I am in strong support of all unions and I feel there should be more union workers and unions.
