Was Romney a terrible candidate?  sure.  Was Obama a good candidate? yes  Do voters remember the Bush legacy?  yup  The last answer explains this election cycle--the Rs tried to ignore W but the people remembered.  Rove should have tried to resurrect Bush somehow-- a difficult job, but one he never attempted.  Hiding him in the closet made his stench worse.

    Apres Bush, le deluge.

The GOP tried to have it both ways with Bush. They wanted to pretend he didn't exist, didn't involve him in the campaign at all, at least not that I saw. Yet, Romney refused to differentiate himself at all from Bush, and got offended if people even asked him how he was different from Bush.

It's a fair question. A candidate should be expected to embrace or distance himself from his predecessor. It is part of learning who the candidate is.

The GOP had a mantra whenever it was pointed out that the problems began under the Bush adminstration. Over and over, the GOP kept claiming that everything was GREAT until Obama took over, and got huffy when told that wasn't true. It seems the public didn't buy what the GOP was selling. Plus, Republicans are still blaming Jimmy Carter, blaming FDR and blaming Teddy Roosevelt (Atlas Shrugged is a call to return to the Gilded Age)

Aside from Richard Nixon, when as any former president ever been this shoved to the side?

and failed candidates all become tainted and affixed with a scarlet letter.

Nixon, Ford, Herbert Walker Bush, George W. Bush, all cast aside and pretended they never existed.  Bob Dole, McCain, and now Romney, who is going to simply disappear from the party structure.

The GOP is hoping of permanent amnesia amongst the electorate when it came to their stalwarts, and that had worked in the past, but in the age of instant refreshers via the internet it has become an impossible task.

And people remember how much of a divider & how un-presidential the president #43 was.  Whatever Obama is, he is not divisive (almost to a fault), except to those from the racist south.

      44 Forward.
