    it appears that his racism was primarily expressed in his personal correspondence, which was voluminous, and his views were quite unusual in their intensity, even for the period.  If you pay attention it certainly is evident, although much more subtle, in his fiction.  As you say the less virulent racism that he showed to the world in his published work was quite typical of the era.
