  •  Their slaves were (13+ / 0-)

their income producing property. Never forget that.

Never forget that, in their view, the government unlawfully confiscated their property.

Never forget that, as a result of the 'confiscation' of that 'property', many Southerners lost their ability to generate income to support themselves and to repay the cost of the Civil War (through taxation).

Never forget that many also lost their homes and land as a result of those events.

Never forget this, because they certainly haven't.

    •  Oh, definitely. (7+ / 0-)

How much further could American society have advanced if instead of letting the Jeffersons and Jacksons equivocate 'property rights' as a justification for slavery someone would have reflexively responded: "You mean the right to torture people for money?"

The Lost Cause of the South shouldn't have been allowed to frame itself as the loss of their homes and lands and means of support. It should have been framed as resentment at losing their right to torture people for money and the dismantling of the torture and breeding pits.

public relations campaign to re-frame the war as having been over "States Rights" began almost immediately after Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House.

I've been living here in VA for 22 years now and most conservative Southerners I've met haven't ever even read the declarations of Secession that were issued by Mississippi, Georgia, South Carolina and Texas, which clearly demonstrate that the root cause of the war was in fact, slavery.
