  •  The lost sense of privilege may morph from (6+ / 0-)
a sense of lost white male privilege. Fundamentalist religion is a perfect fit since it feels the same grievance.
The lost sense of privilege may morph from white and male, to righteous and male, to just righteous.  This the only way I can understand women (of any race) who are committed to the Republican party and their policies. They actually feel safer when there is a man in charge, and when their male leaders let them down, (by compromising), they step in to fill a role they see the men losing ground on.

But they really don't want an authoritarian woman in charge, they want an authoritarian man in charge, and are happy to play as surrogates in the mean time.

How else can we explain the success of pols like Michelle Bachmann? Her religious beliefs put women squarely in the home, under the authority of men.  She wins by convincing both men and women that Christian men should make the rules, and they can overlook her femaleness because she believes the same thing that fundamentalist Christian men believe.
