  •  Racism isn't just about skin color. (1+ / 0-)

That's a misconception and one which allows people to deny the existence of racism if they can identify "exceptional" others. For example, slave owners used to justify owning human beings with examples of slaves who were supportive of the institution of slavery. Are we to say they weren't racist because they earnestly claimed to love and respect those slaves that knew their place?

    That's clearly absurd.

    •  Racism is about race, be it based on skin color or (0+ / 0-)

religion (I'm a very white-skinned Jew). Which is a subset of bigotry, be it based on race or gender. Which is based on ignorance, fear and a need to dominate.

Speaking of the racism of slaveowners, if you're not familiar with Jefferson's check out this comment I posted on it yesterday

      Typical excerpt:

The slave, when made free, might mix with, without staining the blood of his master. But with us a second is necessary, unknown to history. When freed, he is to be removed beyond the reach of mixture.
And Jefferson was considered among the more enlightened of the slaveowning class. Uhuh. Part of why I'm a Hamiltonian.

      •  It's really not that simple. (0+ / 0-)

Obviously racism is related to skin color, but it's not as simple as people hating anyone darker than a paper bag.

There are many people who "pass" for example, who are as light-skinned as you are, who, nonetheless have historically faced the same discrimination as darker-skinned blacks like me.

If you think skin-color is the primary basis for racism, you really don't understand its nature.

I said racism is based on race, not skin color (necessarily or primarily). I.e. being or seeming to be sufficiently different "racially" from a more dominant "racial" group, in ways that seem threatening or inferior to, that group, and thus in its view justifying discrimination. Such racial differences can be but are not limited to skin color or religion. European Jews were just as white as European Christians, and yet were subjected to racism, because they were seen as belonging to an inferior race. Similar thing with Japanese and Chinese, who are racially related but obviously also distinct, with Japanese historically looking down at Chinese.

Btw, I'm certainly no expert on, but am familiar with that odious white southern view among some that even a drop of black blood in someone's ancestry makes them black and thus inferior, even if it's not visible. Thus the above quote.
