though to be thorough, it's often a emotional problem, with a cognitive complication.

One one side of the road you have a poor white family, living in a shotgun shack.  A poor black family lives directly across the road, also in a shotgun shack.

A landowner is looking for one sharecropper, who he will work the family-of to near death, 96 hours a week, with 2 hours off on Sunday for go-to-meeting time.

For the black family that's Church.  For the white family is it Church, or Klan?

"The ISSUE is the damn N****rs taking white folks jobs."
That's the emotional response, with a cognitive core.

The ISSUE is a landowner working anyone as slaves, only he has to pay "something" in this case a bounty on a harvest greater than "x".
    Drought?  Weevils? Locust? Blight?

You get NUTHIN' and LIKE IT BOY.
As you're all "Boy" to the rich man.
The black man knows this, the white man is suffering a cognitive disconnect, in thinking he's the rich man's peer.

Klan aided in creating this cognitive problem - both by freedom of association (why that's Mister Percy ovah theyah)  and by reinforcing existing hatred towards "the other".

Jews, Catholics, Blacks, Liberals, Asians, Latins, Carpetbagging Northerners, and Damn Yankees.

"Don't look at me, THEY'RE the ones keeping you poor."

that it's a cognitive problem with an emotional core, not the other way around.

The white man who thinks he's the rich man's peer -- it's not because he isn't intelligent enough to tell the difference.  It's because he wants to be the rich man's peer.  It's because his self-worth is bound up in his being superior, and that means he needs people to be superior to, and despising "the other" gives him that.
