      The theses were the same: Lincoln's superb blend of principle and pragmatism, but the book had a very broad scope, incorporating biographies of Seward, Chase, Bates and to some degree Stanton, as well as Lincoln, before looking at Lincoln's full presidency.  That would have required a mini-series at least. From a dramatic standpoint, the focus on the 13th Amendment was inspired. Highlighting Thaddeus Stevens, a secondary figure in the book, was also a great idea.
