  •  Soviet Union (7+ / 0-)

There were several assassinations of activists and journalists by the KGB.  I know that the USSR was nominally "communist," but tactically, they were right-wing, wanting to oppress and repress.

or you turn into Jonah Goldberg.

Left-wing totalitarianism is clearly real, and is no less left-wing for being totalitarian.

Communism (Marxism, Leninism, "the dictatorship of the proletariat", whatever) is unabiguously a product of the Left, and is as intrinsically totalitarian as Fascism or National Socialism, which were products of the Right.

We get Lenin, Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot... the Righties get Mussolini, Hitler, Franco... we all need to own the horrifying end-products of our ideologies, lest we allow those ideologies to become pathologies once again, to the deaths of millions.

For the most part, the intellectual Left has abandoned it's long romance with Marxism. This is an unequivocally good thing.

      •  Really though (0+ / 0-)

All those Communist thugs you mentioned.  None lived the life of austerity, sacrifice, and commonality they preached to their citizens.  They lived in luxury and were hardly role models for the cause.  All of those regimes were hardly socialist in the mold of Marx's writings.  They were authoritarian.  Yes, the ideology gave them the path to rise to power but let's not blame Marxism.  Let's blame greedy and violent people that co-opt sound philosophy.  There is not a lick of difference between Stalin and Moussolini, Hitler and Pol Pot.
