    I've heard some of the older men talking. At least in some places and some trades, the only way you got into the apprenticeship program was by being the son or nephew or cousin of a union member -- same as "legacy" college admissions -- or by paying a large bribe. The result was unions that played a major role in maintaining the white male monopoly on good-paying skilled jobs.

    I suspect (but have no proof) that one reason some unions do less of this training now is because of some court cases that required them to open up the apprenticeship positions to "those people." In other words, we're only interested in helping train our own kids, not someone else's.
