  •  Kids might need to work, but they could (5+ / 0-)

get light duty and fewer hours, I mean, realistically it is awful but sometimes necessary

    •  Why do kids need to work? (8+ / 0-)

Kids need to be in school.

"The factory is so near the golf links
      That almost every day
The laboring children can look out
And see the men at play."

    •  "The kids need to work.... (5+ / 0-)

so they can and their families can eat."

Is exactly the sort of thinking that prevented the end of child labor in the USA into the freaking 1930s!

That kind of thinking has children still laboring in the agricultural industry where they are exposed to toxic sprays.

      Child labor is not necessary.
Children belong in school and that is what we should be fighting for, not for "light duty" in factories. Yeah like the factory owner is going to pay attention to that regulation.

If a product is made by child labor, DON'T BUY IT.

(actually from the historical society in nearby Keene, NH) in the early 1900s was that it was not across the board. If you look carefully at the photos of workmen at different companies, you will find it is nearly all young men. Only one company in particular, a wooden box company was notorious for using boys and it shows in the photos. So I am suggesting that not all companies then did it- there was a minimum moral standard for some owners, and if it is still that way today, then there are only a few companies that to feel the pressure, not a whole industry to change.

And right now, while Walmart is already on the hot-seat, is the time to bring ALL the ammo out.

        •  Disagree, EVERYONE (4+ / 0-)

is complicit. And EVERYONE needs to be on the hot seat:

          the employing company
          the receiving company
          the consumers (that's us)
the government which allows products from child labor into
             the country.
the government which does not strongly enforce labor law
so-called-liberals who make excuses..."oh it's necesaty for them to work"..."oh it's just some of the owners doing it, not all."

We should not be counting on any capitalist's "Moral Standard," the laws should be strong and severely enforced.
When was the last time you saw a Capitalist hauled off to prison for negligent homicide?
