I thought this was changed to only 5 yeears after leaving office, but the Secret Service website says that it's 10 years after leaving office.

    Secret Service FAQ

In 1965, Congress authorized the Secret Service (Public Law 89-186) to protect a former president and his/her spouse during their lifetime, unless they decline protection. In 1997, Congress enacted legislation (Public Law 103-329) that limits Secret Service protection for former presidents to 10 years after leaving office. Under this new law, individuals who are in office before January 1, 1997, will continue to receive Secret Service protection for their lifetime. Individuals elected to office after that time will receive protection for 10 years after leaving office. Therefore, President Clinton will be the last president to receive lifetime protection.
If we don't get the last of Al Qaeda within 2026, I would imagine that Obama would be vulnerable.

Time to rethink that law, IMHO.

I don't want anything to happen to Obama.  Even after he leaves office the crazies will still want to harm him.

if he does work like other Presidents tend to do, here and abroad. It's not like the same people who spew hate speech about him are going to be suddenly friendly to him once his terms are up. I'm sure that law was done out of budgetary reasons, but I'd rather pay more and make sure we keep our ex-Presidents safe from harm than save a small faction of a percent on the budget.

I agree that the Obama family will need access to protection for their lifetimes.

Definitely something for Congressional Democrats to push for legislation to correct.

I foresee an interesting Congressional debate. Lots of publicity, I hope !!

Something that doesn't make good sense, makes bad sense. That means someone is being deliberately hurtful & selfish. Look for motives behind actions & words.
