  •  No, he didn't, because it wasn't legally required. (5+ / 0-)

Sure, his father set the precedent and the main party candidates have provided years worth, but they've all done it voluntarily as a show of good faith.  Mitt Rmoney had no such good faith.  It's required for Senate confirmations of Presidential appointments, but since Income Tax wasn't in the Constitution at the time of the listing of qualifications to be President listed in the Constitution, and since the amendment establishing the Income Tax didn't make providing any of the records a requirement, he isn't legally obligated to provide them.  Congress can't pass a law requiring them either, because I'm sure such a law would be considered unConstitutional for the reason I just provided - it would be one branch of the government imposing a requirement on another that isn't written into the Constitution.

Mitt thumbed his nose at the country, and fortunately enough of the country decided to vote for President Obama that we don't have to concern ourselves with those returns (though I wholeheartedly support holding the Masters of the Universe to what laws have been allowed to continue to exist that purportedly affect them).

      Thank for the insights!

What I hope the take home on this whole taxtoolooza debacle is to contrast and compare:

Banks now require 2 years tax returns on loans, at a minimum, and it isn't because of a law.  It is because of the legal "due diligence," now imposed on them.  Similarly, even without a law requiring it, I hope that the media on which we rely in our democracy will remind the constituency that not producing tax returns is a non-starter.
