  •  It's very strange that we live in such a (5+ / 0-)

big country, actually such an enormous country, with a positively gargantuan military presence around the world, home base to innumerable, huge corporate conglomerates churning out billions upon billions of dollars per year...

and yet Republicans think that somehow we should have a very small government, or perhaps almost no government at all. That providing basic sustenance and health care for all citizens is neither necessary nor desirable.

That huge swaths of the nation's inner cities should be simply left to decay and breed poverty and crime and violence, generation after generation, without governmental interference, or care or pity. And that this is perfectly alright, and a perfectly natural thing to happen, because social Darwinism or something... And besides, the better sort of people can always move somewhere else, because it's a free country, and in a free country there shouldn't be much government.

And if the whole place goes to shit in a few years, with people shooting each other in shopping malls, and swat-team cops herding protesters into pens after we start kicking the shit out of Iran (which they deserve anyway on account of not being Christian) well that's OK too because Armaggedon ya know. It was bound to happen because the Bible ya know, and homosexuals and sin and stuff.

So: The Republican base - which makes up damn near half the electorate in the USA, so there's no getting around it.... all crazy out-of-their-minds and strung out on crappy theology, propaganda-laced TeeVee and poisonous food, and even more poisonous consumerism, all band together at election time to elect paid-off shysters whose main job is to channel public funds into the pockets of the greedy billionaires who prop them up.

And this whole jalopy of an over-priced, dysfunctional conglomeration of wealthy, self-seeking plutocrats and willfully ignorant wage-slaves is presided over by a militaristic cabal of xenophobic industrialists whose primary devotion is to the bottom line.

While resting on the laurels of our accumulated wealth and power, bombastically and moralistically proclaiming ourselves king of the hill, bullying small nations to our will, we resolutely refuse to engage in any sort of introspection or dialogue whatsoever, while the very substance of our own structural integrity falls into disrepair and neglect and ruin.

Is it any wonder that Der Spiegel sees America as a nation in decline? Jeebus. The wonder is that Americans themselves can't see it. We've become a laughing stock to the rest of the world.

Our so-called principles of freedom and justice for all have become a sick joke to anyone with an Arabic name. We allow uniformed goons to frisk us every time we get on an airplane, without complaint. Our friendly local police forces have morphed into over-equipped military squads. Our prisons have become overflowing, self-perpetuating gulags, run for profit. Our bankers have become criminals who hire our politicians.

Is this a nation in decline? You bet your sweet booty it is.
