  •  "Family" is winger code for iron-age morality (1+ / 0-)

When they use phrases like "family-friendly" or "pro-family", or put the word "family" in the name of an organization, they're signaling a commitment to theocracy, authoritarianism, scientific illiteracy, misogyny, and homophobia.

It's important to distinguish between "family" in the everyday literal sense, and the narrow, hate-based concept that theocons attach to that word. Wingers themselves can't make that distinction. So when they observe that Hispanics live in large, tight-knit families, they automatically assume that Hispanics must therefore hate gays, feminism, science, and every other facet of modernity. They forget that not everyone buys into their pre-enlightenment definition of "family".

This is yet another example of how people living inside an ideological bubble find it difficult to build alliances with people outside of it.
