    Peter Diamond, Nobel Prize winner in Economics and current  Professor of Economics at MIT and Emmanuel Saez, Economics Professor at U.C. Berkeley , have proposed a 73% top progressive tax rate in their working paper The Case for a Progressive Tax: From Basic Research to Policy Recommendations.

    The paper is quite a slog, but fascinating once you get going.  Greg Mankiw, Mitt Romney's economic adviser, has written a response to the paper here, and Brad DeLong's blog features Antonio Fatas'  dissection of Mankiw's response (and the fallacy of his logic), along with a fascinating comments section here.
