    ...What's the official policy?  Are Wal*Mart loss prevention people trained AT ALL in any restraint techniques?  Even Wal*Mart video-training? (Which would be a completely terrible way to try to learn restraining techniques-- there's no substitute for actual real-life practice.)

    Or is the company purposely hiring ex-military, ex-cops or martial artists who (at least in theory) learned the techniques elsewhere?  If these are skills Wal*Mart expects workers to bring to the job, they should probably have some kind of pre-employment test to see if candidates can perform them appropriately.  

    Also, is there any added incentive (a bonus, etc.) to the worker for actually catching a shoplifter?  Or are individual Wal*Mart workers ordered NOT to confront shoplifters, and we're just seeing the handiwork of a few individuals who want to be vigilantes-- ones who should never have been hired in the first place?

    I think the distinctions are important, because it would be helpful to know where along the line the bad decision or bad training originated.  Different situations would call for different interventions to fix the problem.
