  •  Rocky's been inching up on his "Byrd moment" (5+ / 0-)

(A reference to the late senator's blast at the coal industry before he died)

The best place to watch what Rockefeller does w/r/t coal is Coal Tattoo, the blog written by Ken Ward Jr., the Gazette's reportorial authority on the coal industry in WV. Most recently (August), Rockefeller spoke out against the "War on Coal" meme and how it damages both citizens and the industry. He's been working hard on mine safety legislation in the wake of UBB, and he's angry that the coal companies are so blindly selfish they don't realize protecting their workers is "good business."

Relatedly, before the election I attended the local Jefferson-Jackson dinner where Rockefeller was the guest speaker. On the one hand, he looked rather frail. On the other, he spoke extemporaneously and just hammered the Republicans for their greed, fear-mongering, and bigotry, and really exhorted everyone to stand with President Obama. One of the most honest speeches I've ever heard.

Rockefeller and Capito (pfui!) have a pretty positive working relationship (generally speaking, the WV delegation does a good job of sticking together - easy when everything is about one issue, coal!). It wouldn't surprise me to see him retire if he thinks Capito will get the R nomination - but he'd fight back if the Rs throw one of their right-wing nutjobs at him.
