  •  We have no national interest there any more. (18+ / 0-)

Going in to take out Al Qaeda was a rational justification (whether or not you think it was a sufficient one). They had attacked us and the Afgan government wasn't going to do anything to stop them.

The main Al Qaeda organization is destroyed, Bin Laden is dead, and there is no international terrorist base left in Afghanistan. We have accomplished our goals and we need to get out.

The idea that we can promote democracy at the point of a gun is ludicrous. The thugs and drug lords we are supporting may be better than the Taliban, but it is a close call at best. We can't police every hell hole on earth, and especially not ones that don't want to be policed.

    •  Not so sure of that at all. (0+ / 0-)

We, Europe, China, and India have our eye on Afghanistan's mineral wealth and ways to obtain and pipe natural gas that do not involve coyote Russia. It is in U.S. interests to make sure India stands toe-to-toe with China. There's a lot in play in this part of the world with major consequences for the next 50-100 years at least.
