    And you just wind up with a bunch more people filing for disability.

    Once a person is over 55 and if they have any health problems that would prevent them from performing their past work then they can likely get SS disability.

    Most anybody who is over 60 and worked at any sort of physical job has arthritis or other impairments that Social Security would judge as limiting them to the point of being unable to perform their past work.

    So really raising the retirement age would probably only save a little. People who worked sedentary jobs would have to work longer but nearly anyone else who has experienced work related wear and tear, OR just chronic health problems associated with that age would still retire early.

    Maybe earlier than if they kept the retirement age lower because they would tough it out for the full benefit.
